Religious Views Political Responsibility And Personal Choices

By Jennie Sandoval

The ideas of political responsibility are reasonably new considering the length mankind has been active on the planet. In the distant past it was always whom ever had the biggest armies, was strongest, or was god's chosen representative that held power over common people. The typical person had little to do or say with what direction their country, clan or city moved in.

Things have changed a lot since the time of queens and kings and their vessels. This was a religious and political doctrine held by many monarchs that held kingship as a steward to his people. This divine right could only be received directly from the will of God. There-fore it was believed that only only the divine may judge an unjust or unfit king so kings could never do wrong.

Part of this stems from the ancient idea that God bestowed the earthly power to rule by a spiritual force. It was also felt that the spiritual leadership was given over to some form of religious leader to lead the masses on the road to faith. These leaders had a responsibility to the people to look out for them and always do what was in their best interest. Sadly power, great and otherwise often corrupts.

Leading up to the glorious revolution at mid 1688 this theory fell into disfavor with many countries. It was weakened further world wide during the onset of the revolution in American and the revolution in France during the later parts of the eighteenth century. People realized that they could select the people that could rule them and if they did it poorly, they could also be replaced.

With the failure of several monarchies, the holy churches that they derived power and authority from diminished in influence and power with them. As more powerful splinter regions gained popularity people slowly realized that nature of the relationship with god was more personal than external. Because of this personal relationship idea, they felt they should not be told how to show their faith by other people.

From these historical revelations came the idea that each person is a sovereign onto themselves and with this comes the responsibility to choose who would lord over them. In most cases it is a group of people chosen ether directly or indirectly by the masses. These groups of people have many different names. They have been called congress, parliament, councils, and bureaus to name a few.

History has illustrated to us that evil people still seek power. Often they will try to place themselves in these places which are voted on by fellow voters, be it through some type of deception or other more nefarious ways. It falls to every responsible person to remove these evil people to protect their fellow man.

It is believed that only in the last five hundred years has humanity awoken to the theory of political responsibility. This new idea that every individual is a sovereign capable of making any choices for their own welfare. As sovereigns, individuals should try to remember they are ultimately responsible for all people they choose to put in charge.
