Garden Veggie Patties Offer A Tasty Alternative

By Jennie Sandoval

Being a vegan or vegetarian becomes easier all the time with the products available today. Garden veggie patties are just one of these. They offer a tasty alternative to meat and a great source of low, fat protein.

Amongst all the brands available on the market, there are a number which are made to taste as much like meat as possible. Others allow the flavor of the vegetables to dominate. The taste that comes through depends on the vegetables used.

Many brands of non-organic soy burgers use soybeans as a base. Unlike many plant foods, the soybean provides a very good source of protein. Some individuals object to soy in products and they have the option of choosing non soy based products which use mostly vegetables and grains.

Vegetables which can be used include carrots, beans, corn, peppers, onions and mushrooms. Beans are perfect because they are sticky, versatile, and rich in nutrients like protein and fiber. Beans and legumes are also easily mashed and help to bind a patty.

Manufacturers usually use starch and fibers from natural plants in small quantities as binders. As they are used in such small amounts they do not affect the taste. There are other ingredients which can be used to help bind vegetables as well as give taste and texture such as brown rice.

A patty usually includes some natural flavors to stimulate the taste receptors. One of these is yeast extract. Sodium phosphate may be added to give taste too. Sunflower oil and corn oil are often added to help give moisture and prevent a patty from being too dry.

One of the benefits of eating a meatless patty is that it is much lower in fact. Some actually contain more than 70 percent less fat than the meaty variety. They also contain no trans fats or saturated fats which are bad for health.

It is important to check the ingredients listed on the package before purchase. There are some products which contain soy, milk and egg which are not good for those with food allergies and sensitivities. Those held together with gluten are also obviously bad for someone on a gluten-free diet.

It is not so easy to find a product which is not only nutritious but is also tasty to eat. A patty which does not have enough moisture and easily falls apart is not appealing. People prefer a patty which is firm and crunchy but moist and full of flavor at the same time.

A patty is quick and easy to cook. It is important to keep in mind that it does not need as long to cook as meat because it do not contain as much fat. It can dry out quickly if overcooked. This is why frying one on both sides in a bit of oil in a skillet is often the best method.

Garden veggie patties provide a healthy substitute. They do not contain nearly the amount of fat as the ground meat variety. Keeping some in the refrigerator means that there is always a quick, tasty meal option available.
