What Child Psychiatrists In NYC Do

By Marci Glover

Child psychiatry is a subdivision in the field of psychiatry that specializes in studying, diagnosing, treating, and preventing psychopathological disorders in kids, adolescents, and their families. Child psychiatrists in NYC are highly specialized in clinical investigation of how psychiatric disorders in kids respond to interventions. The investigation covers demographic, biologic, psychosocial, genetic, and environmental factors. As early as 1883 there were several people in different nations doing studies about psychiatric disorders in kids.

This field classifies disorders into several categories including anxiety, gender identity, development, psychotic, eating, mood, and disorders of behavior and attention. Development disorders comprise of learning ability and Asperger disorder. Mood disorders include depression and bipolar problems. Disorders in attention and behavior cover oppositional defiant, attention deficit hyperactivity, and conduct. Anxiety disorders include panic, obsessive compulsive, and phobias problems.

Psychiatrists work in close association with affected children in finding a solution to the problem. All solutions are then shared with parents. The initial step involves conducting a deep diagnostic assessment in an attempt to understand the depth of the current situation. Attention is given to emotional, cognitive, social, peer, family, educational, and developmental components. The practitioner does not make the final decision alone, both the customer and the psychiatrist participates.

The process involves several other parties like family members, juvenile courts, former personal physicians, and teachers in some cases. Normally the practitioner is expected to do all the activities they do in the best interest of the client in question. Client assessment involves a mental state examination. To get a conclusive solution, psychiatric and illness history of parents and grandparents is obtained.

There are various treatment options that may be administered to the affected individual. In some cases several options may be administered to a single person at the same time. Common options are cognitive-behavior, behavior, problem-solving, family, psychodynamic, and problem-solving therapies. Other options include training of parents and use of conventional medication. All external bodies such as schools, juvenile courts, primary care physicians, pediatricians, and social agencies are also advised accordingly.

To establish a career as an adolescent and child psychiatrist in New York City, four years of study in a known medical school is required. When that is over, additional 3 years of residency training in general adult psychiatry, neurology, and medicine is needed. A 2 year-training course in child psychiatry is necessary in other situations too. A lot of competence must be demonstrated in adult psychiatry for one to be allowed to place their specialization in this sub-division.

After going through the entire training and successfully completing, one becomes eligible for taking the certification examination. This examination is administered by two bodies in America, that is, ABPN and AOBNP. Once one passes the examination, they receive a license to seek employment or to start their own centers for dispensing psychiatric services to the public.

It can be hard to find a psychiatrist whose specialty is in kids if one is not aware of where to search. Hospitals, department of psychiatry in medical schools, mental health associations, and medical centers are the best places to search from. Learning more about the professional is better before seeking their services.
