Where Can I Buy Pepper Spray?

By Marie M. Clarke

There are many places to buy pepper spray, but you won't find it at most of your local retail stores. You won't see "The Pepper Spray Store" at your local mall. Pepper spray, a non-lethal personal safety product, along with personal safety and protection, are things that most people don't want to talk about. No one thinks that she (or he) will be a victim. But for those smart ones who want to be ready just in case, here are some places to buy pepper spray:Your local gun store/range-along with guns, ammo, targets, supplies, it probably will have a selection of sprays.Your local sporting goods store-if this store carries firearms and supplies, it probably will also carry pepper sprays.

So where do you buy pepper spray and other self-defense products? Most department or outdoors stores usually carry a small selection. They will typically have the small 1/2 oz models, normally in a plastic our leather case and large models that are labeled as bear sprays. If you find it in a discount or club store be sure to check the expiration date, most canister are good for 3 to 4 years if they are close you may not be getting much of a deal. local gun dealers carry a wider selection and may be newer, drawback you are going to pay a premium price to them. You can ask friends and relatives if they have purchased sprays you might be surprised how many other people own them or have looked for sprays also.

My best advice go to the internet and do a search for " where do you buy pepper spray" type it in quotes as shown it will narrow the results you get back. The first 3 or 4 listings are paid ads and will likely include eBay, Amazon and WalMart these are good for getting an idea what is available and prices however here again you may be getting products that have been sitting awhile. The next 10 or 20 should yield a good number of on-line retailers that have been around for a good while or the search engines would not have any interest in them.

BUYING FROM A LOCAL STORE: Buying mace spray or oleoresin capsicum spray from a local store is the best option if you need to have it right now. This way, you do not have to wait for it to be shipped and can have quick access to the product. The problem with this is that most local hardware stores or department stores know very little to nothing about the product. So finding the right spray for your situation will be up to you. The thing to consider is that you can buy the product from a local store, then go ahead and do some research online and have a can or two on reserve, in case you need it.

BUYING FROM AN ONLINE STORE: The only disadvantage to buying from an online store is waiting for the spray to be delivered. Normally, after you place your order, you can expect 3-5 days for delivery. However, there are many advantages to making your purchase online. You can shop around and find the most competitive pricing and discounts. There are several stores online that specialize in only self defense sprays. Many of these have trained staff available to help you determine which pepper spray is right for you, and answer questions about how to use the sprays, etc. When buying online, make certain that you are dealing with a company that knows the product.

Another of the great Mace Products is the Mace Pocket Defense Spray (Hot Pink) - The Hot Pink Mace Defense Spray Pocket size model is convenient for storage in your pocket, belt, or purse. Designed to fit the average women's hand and is accurate and easy to discharge. The 12 gram unit contains approximately 5 to 15 short bursts with an effective range of 8 to 12 ft. This is more safe and effective than a stun gun since stun guns require a close contact self-defense perimeter.

While there are no proven long-term negative effects, being sprayed can be quite debilitating in the short-term, causing burning sensations, tearing, coughing, nausea and other symptoms. If you decide to buy pepper spray, take the time necessary to learn its proper use, ensuring you'll know exactly what to do if confronted by an assailant or angry dog. Most cities will have multiple self-defense classes, some in-depth others covering the basics and most discussing the pros and cons of using self defense sprays, as well as other self defense tips.

When someone is looking for a self defense spray I know they want something that will keep them safe and prevent who knows what. Just buy a spray with a high concentrate and you should be fine. One more thing to consider is your states laws. Most states have no restrictions with concealing and carrying pepper spray. As of this writing there are several states that do not allow pepper spray shipping. They are as follows: out of the U.S.A., to WI, NY, MA or MI. Although they cant be shipped it does not mean that you cant buy them in your state. Check local and federal laws if your not sure. I always tell people to look online first and if they find something that does not mention their state restriction to buy it there. Other than that check local gun/sportsman shops.

Since pepper sprays have a shelf life, if you are unsure of when yours expires, be sure and replace it with a new can once a year, on the conservative side. Then you can use the old can to practice with. Print a picture of a face on the computer, and tack the picture up on the fence or a tree. Then stand upwind and shoot away!OC SPRAY ILLUSTRATION: Pepper spray is derived from cayenne pepper, so imagine biting down on a single very hot chili pepper, it's likely to cause discomfort but the symptoms will quickly diminish. The same experiment with 10 potent chili peppers is likely to invoke tears, coughing and more. While not a scientific comparison, this is similar to the difference between a 1% solution, and a 10% solution.

While defense sprays are available (in most instances) over-the-counter, there may be state laws affecting their use. Most retail establishments should have this clearly posted, if not be certain to ask. Since your purchase is likely for all the right reasons, you wouldn't want to break the law inadvertently. If you have difficulty determining the law, either do an online search or call your local law enforcement agency and simply ask. When considering your purchase think about a scenario where the pepper mace must quickly be deployed, could you place your hands on it in seconds? With that thought consider a "Hip Holster" (basically a belt clip). A defense spray holster makes grabbing the canister as easy as reaching for your cell phone. When you buy OC spray or tear gas, you're in essence buying peace of mind knowing if danger does strike, you'll have defensive measures in the palm of your hand.Final Note: When using a dog pepper spray keep in mind that some dogs may not have the proper mechanism for draining the tears out of the lachrymal gland (tear duct). Therefore, it is important to use an EPA approved canine repellent spray that has a lower concentration of oleoresin capsicum.
