A Look At A Talk Show About Surviving Oppression

By Frank Burns

Every issue experienced by man is subject to oppression. Sometimes it involves abuse, and others a disregard for another's ideas, or other differences where oppressive actions can occur. Whether it is an overall action, or just an individual or small group being oppressed, it is still hurtful and inexcusable. Some survive unbelievable odds, and others don't handle it well at all. Whatever, it must be addressed. Some suggest talking about it in a talk show about surviving oppression. This may help the persons involved know what to do.

There has been the suggestion that we should overcome the issue by first talking about it openly. Others say that teaching those oppressed how to deal with the issue in spite of ongoing status is the best way to deal with it. It may well be, however, that the best way to overcome it is to talk openly about it. The talk show, such as TED talks or Open Forums, may be the final answer.

If we don't get the conversations right, all the culturally responsive teaching in companies, classrooms, and the political arena, will not work. Part of this means to address it openly from both sides of any situation.

Talk shows aren't the only way to examine an issue, though that is one. In this issue, there are several shows on a dystopia society the deal with the issue that is the result of an oppressive situation. Some are in the nature of documentaries, though fictionalized, and some are of a comedy nature. However, there is the danger of not addressing it correctly. Great care should be taken.

Survival reality shows address the idea of oppression in its many forms. They are very interesting to many, and may help one to understand the many ways a person can be oppressed. Some have complained, however, that the programs are too depressing to watch, and others have complained that the true nature is not revealed. Some have stated that focusing on the oppressive actions to that extent makes the oppressed feel it even more, while others, they say, feel their needs are being addressed in part.

What one person considers oppressive, another might not consider it of any consequence. The different forms of areas in which one might be oppressive, including racial, political, and religious, as well as many others. When one make a person feel inferior to them, or like they do not have personal freedom or freedom of expression, that is being oppressive. Many times the one being oppressive does not even recognize they are being such, since they are not aware of others' feelings.

Oppressive situations result when one group of people has the desire to rule over another group. This desire to be in control leads to oppressive conditions. Education can help to overcome some of these issues, but it is not an easy or quick solution. Education must start with the youth and cover over generations, allowing better relations to develop.

Talking about oppression is believed to be a solution, at least for the beginning. It is only one step, however. Teaching management of the situation to an oppressed person is only the beginning. It does not eliminate the problem. There may never be a complete solution, but helping a person recognize how they are treating others, especially if that person has lesser authority, education, or financial resources than themselves if a sure beginning.
