The Overarching Goal Of Defenders Of The Gospel

By Elizabeth Powell

Spreading the word of God isn't always easy. After all, the Bible, which delivers the Gospel, has long been the world's best-selling book. A lot of people are familiar with it, but many have strong misconceptions about what it means and who it is for. This is why it is important for defenders of the Gospel to have a clear understanding of their overarching goal.

For one thing, the Gospel itself is not what people think it is. In an accurate translation of this word, Gospel means good news. In fact, it actually means news that is so good that it is almost impossible to be true. Understanding this fact can help to do away with the many negative connotations that surround the Bible and God Himself.

The good news tells people about the story of Christ. More than who Jesus is, it also tells people about why he came to earth and the sacrifice they made. People tend to start punishing themselves when their consciences become guilty and heavy with sin. God can punish them as well, and the devil will certainly rise up to accuse them. Dying in a life a sin can lead to everlasting torment in hell.

However, because Christ has overcome sin by paying the ultimate penalty for it, people only need to believe in Jesus Christ and this amazing sacrifice that he has made to allow them to overcome death. This sacrifice has given mankind assured access to eternal life if they would only believe. They also need to confess their sins and acknowledge Jesus as the risen son of the Almighty God.

When defending the Gospel, however, many people make the mistake of making concessions about sin. Given that this is the late hour and that Christ could be returning at any time, this is a grave mistake and a sign of poor diplomacy. A good diplomat or representative of Christ must tell the truth. Although sin is readily and easily forgiven by God in the name of his son, this does not mean that he does not tolerate willful sinning.

People have to walk a fine line between acknowledging the law and representing Jesus. Believing in Christ means that you are already forgiven for your sins. Loving Christ, however, and building a relationship with him is what inspires people to work towards lifestyles that are righteous and free of sin.

All defenders should also remember that no one is righteous before the Lord. The only man that has ever walked the earth and left it sin-free was Christ himself. Thus, judging others is not the goal of representing God. It is instead, convincing the world how much Jesus loved all of humanity in order to sacrifice himself.

When people understand the true and unlimited love that is given freely by both Jesus and God, they are more likely to make a commitment to Christ then not. Thus, rather than telling people how they are doomed to hell on the basis of their sinful lifestyles, Christians should tell others how much God loves them. Moreover, they should do this with the utmost humility and with the understanding that relationship-building with Christ is what will ultimately eliminate the desire for sin.
