What Type Of Models To Use

By Dennis E. Price

Hairdressing students are always encouraged to practice their skills as often as they can in their spare time and well as in the college. Books and written work on this particular course will only go so far but on this course training and learning new styles is all the game. New students may be encouraged to work on live or plastic models during their course work. Over the months students will increase their skills by practice.

New students are prevented from using live people for their demonstrations instead they can practise on artificial model with hair for styling for wedding, proms or every day usage. Pupils can also watch live demonstrations by other qualified artists.

Dummy models are only suitable to practise colours and various styles because hair cutting by students may result in a big mistake happening on the fake hair rendering the dummy unusable for anyone else to take their turn.

Over a period of time pupils will be able to work with live models under close supervision as new hairdressers will need to require the skill to talk and understand their clients needs especially if they are in pain due to an illness. They will learn the skills to adapt and care for people with needs.

Hairdressers who are just learning may wish to jump right in and start with live models and may think working on fake heads is not hairdressing do not realise the potential for growth in their confidence when it is their turn to work with their own clients.

By practising on both clients and model heads the hairdressing in training will slowly begin to find their feet and perfect their skills.
