Knowing Your Way Around Lakota Culture Native American Lesson Plans

Whenever you are trying to get students to really understand the way these people live and learn, it is important to make sure that they understand what an oral tradition is. Simply knowing the definition, though, does not always tell you enough to make sure that you really understand what a culture that relies on an oral tradition looks and operates like. This is an essential part of anyone's Lakota culture native American lesson plans.

When the Europeans started settling in this vast region, they did everything they could to erase the rich cultures that were there. This is an unfortunate tragedy that can never be undone. However, you can make sure that your students understand it so that it might never happen again.

It might be discouraging to hear all about the hardships that these people have had to go through. However, it can be nice to know that many aspects of this people's way of life have endured. This is largely due to their oral way of keeping track of things.

If you want to hear some great stories that these people have to offer, it is good to visit with them in the wintertime. It's good to let your students know this. It is also good to make sure that they understand why this is traditionally the case.

When you hear something over and over again, you tend to remember it better. That is certainly the idea behind the way these people keep track of their histories. By repeating the same tales, the elders can get every detail into the young ones' heads.

Besides keeping track of their stories and histories orally, there are also times where records of the year's events are kept in the form of pictorial diagrams. The problem with these, unfortunately, is that as it is with so many other forms of physical record-keeping, they can be destroyed. This fact was exemplified by the destructive European settlers, who decimated many historical artifacts that can never be recovered.

The history of these people goes as far back as the people themselves. They have not lost anything that they've had in their oral traditions since the very beginning. That's why it's great to hear what these stories tell.

When people were first arriving in the world, according to their legends, one group was tricked into coming to early. This led to them being transformed into an animal. This animal is what we today call the buffalo.
