The Stones In Your Pink Sapphire And Topaz Bracelet Have An Interesting History Behind Them

By Ryan Myers

Some people believe that if you are lucky enough to own a fine piece of jewelry, you should know something about how and why the gems and metals were chosen. Jewelry collectors are especially interested in the history of the pieces they invest in. If someone has gifted you with a pink sapphire and topaz bracelet, that individual will probably be impressed that you were interested enough to learn more about it.

The word origin of bracelet is of the arm, and more than seven thousand years ago people were circling their arms and wrists in an effort to ward off evil spirits, heal themselves, and make themselves more attractive to the opposite sex. The earliest indication of bracelets seems to come from China, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. Our ancient ancestors wore bracelets made of grass. Silver and gold bracelets don't show up until after the Bronze Age.

If you were born in September, you may already know that sapphires are the traditional birthstone of this month. Sapphires are considered symbols of truth, faithfulness, and nobility. Most people associate sapphires with brilliant blue. Prince Charles gifted Diana with a blue sapphire perhaps because it is also associated with royalty and romance. During the Middle Ages, religious orders wore the gems as a symbol of heaven.

All sapphires are a variety of corundum. Rubies are also corundum. There is no such thing as a red sapphire, but there are pink sapphires in many variations of red. The more chromium the stone contains the darker and more valuable it will be. There are orange pink sapphires called padparadscha, meaning lotus flower. They originated in Sri Lanka and are highly prized in that Asian country.

The birthstone of November is the topaz. In Sanskrit the name means fire. If you are celebrating your twenty-third or fourth wedding anniversary, topaz jewelry would make a great, and appropriate, gift. These gems are not rare, but they are very popular. Blue is the most common color you see, but the pinkish orange and yellow gold gems are the most desirable. When jewelers assess these stones they value them in part on how deep the color is.

For the populations that lived during the Middle Ages, topaz had the power to heal and even cheat death. Strength and invisibility were the powers the ancient Greeks believed the stone possessed. They were worn as amulets by the Egyptians to make them immune to injury.

The two gems have interesting histories on their own, but they also have significance when artisans combine them into one piece of jewelry. They both have been worn as symbols of royal status and were believed to have the power to heal and seduce. If you want to make a good impression on a stranger, some believe the combination of these gems will do it.

Owning and wearing interesting jewelry can be a good conversation starter. When people see what you have chosen and question you about its significance, it is fun to give them some historical facts, superstitions, and ancient beliefs. Your friends will be impressed with your knowledge.
