Why Buy From Your Local Military Surplus Store

By Lora Jones

When you next get the chance see how many items of Army style clothing you can spot at your nearest construction site. These are normal everyday construction workers and not the Army's Engineering Corps. These workers know the value of hard wearing work clothes. As a result many do buy these clothes from a military surplus store.

Take the boots for example. They have been designed to take a lot of punishment. The Army spend an awful lot of time in boots, so they have to be durable as well as offering the wearer some comfort. Those working on a construction site also have similar needs, and they don't mind if they are not to the latest approved pattern.

The average person will not think about the thinking and testing that lies behind military equipment and clothing. The fabrics used are both strong and lightweight. Areas subjected to harder wearing, elbows and knees, often have extra thicknesses. If the fabric is tightly woven, it will be mainly windproof.

Even gloves have been given consideration by the Army. The basic requirements are to either protect the hands and fingers, or to keep them warm, ideally both. Yet the gloves can not be so cumbersome that it would be impossible to work in them.

Consider some of the areas where troops have been serving in recent years, these environments can produce some harsh weather conditions. So therefore all of their bad weather clothing has been subjected to extreme testing. When you consider these factors it is unsurprising to see forces clothing being used in a civilian situation.

Take the average hiker, they also need sturdy boots. They will want their rain wear to be both lightweight and effective. Once again a lot of these items have come down through the military route.

It is not only the footwear and clothing that gets used. Once again if you look at the average hiker, their map will be held in a map case. They will be navigating by compass, or by GPS device. If they stop anywhere overnight they could also pitch a tent. All of these things are available to the man on the street in one type of store, and they don't cost a fortune either.

Other popular purchases include tools. They have to be of a highly durable nature due to the conditions that they might have had to have been used in. Not only that but they also have to do the job for which they were designed. For any company supplying the Army a large amount of time and effort is spent ensuring that equipment, and clothing, will do what it's meant to do.

It is hardly surprising to find that such a wide range of folk shop at a military surplus store. It seems to have everything that they need, at very reasonable prices. It is a fallacy that the items sold are worn out or faulty, they have quite often just been superseded, making them in excess of requirement.
