Illinois is America's 21st state, having joined the union in December 1818. Its first chief executive and elected governor was a man named Shadrach Bond. Bond was a member of what was then the Independent Party. So far, Illinois is only one of seven states to have elected independent candidates to the governor's mansion. The others have been Alaska, Maine, Minnesota, Oregon, Rhode Island and Texas. Bruce Rauner, elected to the office of governor more recently, is one of several conservative candidates Illinois 2014.
Patrick Joseph (Pat) Quinn was the 31st governor of Illinois, serving for six years between 2009 and 2015. He assumed office after the previous governor, Rod Blagojevich, was impeached on corruption charges.
Before Bond became governor of Illinois, he represented the Illinois territory in Congress. The years immediately following the Napoleonic Wars are referred to in history as the Era of Good feelings. It is so remembered because of the relative calm induced by the implosion of the Federalist Party upon itself. The country breathed a sigh of relief to see the bitter bickering between the Federalists and the Democrat-Republicans.
Joe Walsh (no connection to the Eagles' guitarist) is a former Congressman-turned-talk show host. He represented the Illinois Eighth Congressional District, which includes the city of Chicago, for two years from 2011 to 2013. His term was cut short when his district was redrawn and he unsuccessfully ran for representative in the newly formed 14th district. Formerly a self-branded moderate Republican, Walsh is now a member of the ultra-conservative Tea Party and a staunch critic of President Barack Obama.
While Alan Keyes has given distinguished service to the country and to the Republican Party, he has never held an elected office. He ran for the Senate in 1988, 1992, and 2004, and also for the presidency in 1996, 2000, and 2008. It was President Ronald Reagan who plucked Keyes from relative obscurity and appointed him Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs, serving from 1985 to 1987. He now has his own talk show.
Never elected to public office but a highly influential Republican in any case, Richard Uihlein graduated from Stanford University in northern California to become a successful businessman and staunch supporter of conservative politics. Determined to keep as much of his money out of the grip of government, he makes donations to the ultra-right Tea Party. He and his wife have their own successful business selling packaging supplies.
Before Joe Walsh, Melissa Bean was the 8th congressional district representative. Before her, it was Philip Crane. The 8th district is significant because it includes the powerful city of Chicago. Crane ran unsuccessfully against Ronald Reagan for the presidency in 1980. George Washington Crane III, his father, was a doctor and a college professor.
By far the most famous conservative politician was 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, a member of the Whig Party. The Whig Party was formed to oppose President Andrew Jackson and his Democratic policies. He is best known for leading the country through the Civil War, freeing the slaves, preserving the union, modernizing the economy, and strengthening the federal government. Lincoln's term as president was cut short by his assassination in 1865 at the hand of John Wilkes Booth, six days after the surrender of General Robert E. Lee.
