The eye movement desensitization and reprocessing is probably a great blessing in the medical world. EMDR which is its shorter term, helped a lot of people. It has been one of the wonderful discovery that psychologist came up.

During an EMDR the expert will move his fingers back and forth in front of you. He will ask you to follow the motion of his hands. There are many practitioners use EMDR therapy for PTSD.

PTSD is a severe psychiatric disorder that can happen after a very traumatic experience. PTSD patients are treated with EMDR, it actually incorporates other elements from psychotherapies like, interpersonal, experimental, body centered therapies and cognitive behavioral. Stressful events can be very hard to handle, but seeking some professional help and confronting your feeling may help a lot. The stressful experiences of the patient will be assessed as the first phase. Symptoms and thoughts that the patient wants to take off from his or her system will be identified and goals will be set for the treatment.

The expert will help you be stable when talking about the event. He will not let you continue if you still cannot handle it. You be taught how to manage your emotions and he will give you techniques to relax. During the second phase, you will be sharing the event.

On the third and phases beyond, things like emotions, beliefs, body sensations and images that are involved in an event will be discussed and identified. After identifying those things, you will follow the hand motion of the practitioner. The whole procedure will continue until the undesirable feeling will be be totally gone. You will be advised to think more positive as you have agreed.

During the seventh phase, you will be instructed to write anything. Anything that you want in connection to the traumatic event you had. An evaluation will then follow as you reach the last treatment session.

EMDR appears to be one of the safest therapeutically. It has no negative side effects. Many medical practitioners use this kind of technique. This therapy is also used in some other psychological issues, like eating disorders, panic attacks, addictions and anxiety. A PTSD client may successfully be treated years after a bad event.
