Weird National Holidays Always Give You Reason To Celebrate

By Angel Dudley

A holiday is something that almost everybody loves. Official ones like Christmas or the 4th of July mean that you can have the day off. In the United States, just about every day is an unofficial holiday too, each one celebrating something different. While there are days that are dedicated to serious causes, there are also some days that are rather strange. With weird national holidays you can celebrate every day with your tongue placed very firmly in your cheek.

If you want to do your bit for a better world, a national or international holiday is the perfect excuse. International Nelson Mandela Day in July is an easy one since it only requires 67 minutes of your time. National Hugging Day is another holiday where a small act can make a huge difference to someone. If there is a specific cause that's close to your heart, you'll probably find a holiday dedicated to it, even if it's Married To A Scorpio Support Day.

You'll find many a holiday to appreciate a certain group of people, from your local pharmacist to disc jockeys and even the weatherman. Some of these days are there to celebrate some very, very important figures, like dragons or the tooth fairy. There's even a Name Your PC Day for that inanimate object that often seems to have a mind of its own.

Education is one of the greatest gifts you can give your children and with days like Stop Bullying Day, World Book Day or Kids' Inventors Day you have the perfect excuse to teach them something new. A fun way to teach them about great literature is Talk Like Shakespeare Day, celebrated on April 23, the Bard's birthday. Don't forget to broaden your own horizons too, for example with Learn Your Name in Morse Code Day.

If you love eating, you can use a holiday calendar to plan the year's menu. There's a day for beans, for pie, for peanut brittle, for pancakes, for red apples and for pretty much anything else that you can eat. National Buffet Day is for when you can't decide what you'd like to nibble on and on December 16 you have the opportunity to make anything taste better by covering it in chocolate.

If you love music, you'll want to celebrate this fact. For example, you may want to celebrate Saxophone Day by listening to some jazz or soul. Violin Day is perfect for the soothing sounds of strings. Also spare a thought for those artists that never quite made it big with National One-hit Wonder Day.

In case you never knew this, the sport of curling is considered cool and there is a day to remind you of the fact. You'll also find special days for playing games, whether you like trivia or cards. If solving puzzles are your thing, you'll be happy to know that there's a day for that activity too.

You may find calendars of weird national holidays such as Talk Like A Pirate Day online. After all, it's useful to know when International Moment of Frustration Scream Day is. One day that you'll definitely want to mark on your calendar is March 10, which is International Day of Awesomeness.
