A Description Of Joshua The Odyssey

By Mona Moody

If you want to become absorbed in a brilliantly written historical novel set in first century Nazareth, you should pick up a copy of the book "Joshua The Odyssey of an Ordinary Man". It is an account of a few years in the life of an adolescent boy called Joshua. The novel opens up the life of Jesus during the years when there is no mention of him in the New Testament.

Because the book is fiction, the author has been free to use his imagination to create conversations and characters that are not mentioned in the Biblical biography of Jesus. The richness of these characters and the way in which he weaves the life and cultural images of Biblical Holy Land shows a wealth of research into the people and the country.

Dr. Theckedath Mathew is the author. His parents were orthodox Christians and his early years were spent in a Hindu environment. The doctor is a cardiologist, and holds a degree in philosophy of the East. He also has earned post-doctoral degrees in Western medicine. He is in demand as a teacher, historian, tv commentator and public speaker.

Parental aspirations for Dr. Mathew were directed at him becoming part of the Catholic priesthood. He attended Catholic schools, but had some difficulty following the regimens imposed there and was expelled from at least one. He was an anti-Communist protester and spent some time in jail for those activities. Eventually he returned to college and gained his degree in zoology.

Dr. Matthew spent time researching every aspect of the Biblical documents to answer the question of who Jesus is. His research incorporated information held Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek and Roman documents. With a brilliantly written novel, the reader is transported two millennia in the past to the ancient surroundings. The book expresses the author's theories about the nature of the Son of God in a fascinating way.

The tale describes the life and travels of Joshua, a prophet. Through these experiences, the author is able to present incidents describing many events that are found in the scriptures. These include healing, travel and teaching. The geographical and cultural explanations are helpful in describing the life of the times. It is apparent in the reading that the author has done a great deal of research and has incorporated it smoothly into the text.

The prophet Joshua is portrayed as the first to stand up for the rights of women. This is linked to the biblical portrayal of Jesus standing up to a circle of guilty men who had brought a prostitute to Him to be stoned. Women of the time could be killed as a point of honor, mutilated, immolated or stoned. Other parts of the narrative describe resurrecting the dead, helping widows and the poor and promoting working people.

Joshua the Odyssey is an unusual volume, but one that will not only hold your interest, but will entertain. At the same time, it will challenge your thinking on topics that you may previously have accepted the current philosophy as accurate. The book is available online from various outlets, including Kindle and in paperback editions.
