Basic Information On Racism In Professional Sports

By Mattie MacDonald

Despite the fact that humans are of the same genetic makeup, share the same planet, contact the same diseases and experience the same emotions, there are still so many differences that divide people apart. As there are over six billion people in the world distributed to one hundred and ninety six countries divided by vast oceans and tall mountains, it is not surprising to note that not everyone really get along well the first chance they get. There is the matter on communication gap to mess things up even more.

These differences often lead to misunderstandings and instances of racism. Discrimination and prejudice are often contributory factors to the said rift. Even in the present times where everybody is aiming for openness and equality, it is quite saddening to note that such an issue still exists. This has even went on to seriously impede the growth of many facets of living, as even entertainment has been affected by racism in professional sports.

This social issue often exists because there are practices, beliefs, and even political systems that consider certain races to be inherently superior or inferior as compared to some. Most of the time, they are based entirely presumed inherent traits, abilities, and qualities. All of these has lead top a further rift between nations because people act based on presumptions.

The population is also quick to assume that there are certain ways that certain groups should follow. No one is allowed to break the tradition, and in the event that one is brave enough to do so, he is easily rained with negative comments from others who hate their guts. This whole act of putting humanity in labeled boxes is a form of suppression of their rights, and these often leads to turmoils.

Another cause is fear. As the old adage goes, people generally fear what they do not understand. Instead of taking measures to know and learn, they often react negatively to these and imply that they are better. This often stems from fear above everything else. They are afraid that they might be replaced by something better, which is why they spread about bad things to eliminate threats.

Fear is also one of the main reasons to this certain societal issue. It is normal for humans to seek their own kind to feel protected. They are also afraid of getting replaced by someone better, somebody who they believe is more desirable and appealing as they are. This replacement is gong to make somebody feel unworthy, and will hide behind the mask of indifference and dislike.

Racism is far more serious than what people think. It can affect the outlook that one has towards living. It can leave one bitter, angry, and violent. It can even make one depressed or mentally ill.

It has managed to affect everything that man participates in, especially with the things that are supposed to make him happy. In the world of entertainment, racism is so rampant that it is evident even in professional sports. Instead of supporting those who are talented, people choose to see others based on their perception of a certain race, which is often not pretty.

What is saddening is that people fail to see people for their talents and skills. These should only be the main concern of sports. Everyone who is good should be allowed in, and not because of his gender, race, religion, or color.
