Without Helping The Youth Of Chicago Society As A Whole Will Suffer

By Amy Meyer

Society and the communities that make up society have changed considerably. People no longer care for each other and nobody seems to have time to help others. It is a culture of each one for himself and in the process, many people become adrift. It is especially young people that are in danger of being lost between the many cracks of modern society. Young people need nurturing and direction. That is why it is so very important to have programs helping the youth of Chicago.

The family unit, which is the cornerstone of a healthy society, has always played a vital role in helping young people to remain on course and to grow up as responsible adults that can take their place in society. Unfortunately, so many families are dysfunctional. The divorce rate keeps rising and busy parents have no time to spend with their children. As a result, young people look for acceptance and direction elsewhere.

So many young people become adrift because they simply cannot find employment. Unfortunately, a poor economy and many other factors have seen to it that job opportunities are becoming increasingly scarce. These young people become desperate, and they often develop feelings of worthlessness. At least some organizations offer youngsters skills training in order to help them become more employable.

Young people often act tough but they are very vulnerable. When they have no support system and when they have no direction or love, they easily become victims of psychological conditions such as depression, feelings of worthlessness, anxiety and other debilitating feelings. That is why some organizations reach out with counseling to help such youngsters to start believing in themselves and to regain confidence in life.

Sadly, drug abuse and alcoholism is on the rise among young people. They abuse substances to escape from the harsh reality and to forget about their troubles for a while. Unfortunately, substance abuse often leads to criminal behavior. Some programs aiming to help young people offer rehabilitation programs, but it is very difficult to convince young addicts that they need help. The success rate is disappointingly low.

Young people in trouble often live on the streets and they drift from one place to another. This makes it very difficult to reach them and help them. To alleviate this problem some organizations have set up places of safety where these unfortunate youngster can have a safe place to overnight and where they can get a square meal. It is at these places that many organizations reach out a hand of compassion to youngsters.

Organizations, charities, churches and even individuals offer excellent programs that can be of much help to young people in trouble. Sadly, they are severely hampered by a lack of resources. There are not enough volunteers, money, facilities and other resources to reach out to the vast number of urban young people that are desperately in need of their help. Much is being done, but much more remains to be done.

Young people will determine the future and if society fails its youngsters in need, the future itself is at stake. One can only hope that every single person and every authority will do more to help those organizations dedicated to young people. It is, in fact, the duty of society to care.
