The Need To Consult A Depression And Anxiety Therapist

By Debra Howard

Clinical depression is something that a considerable fraction of the population is struggling with. Moreover, a considerable slice of this fraction dont receive any form of professional assistance at all. That just goes to show how depression and anxiety therapist frederick md is still very much an overlooked and underappreciated field.

Its quite an eye opening statistic, that as per one of the leading institutes of mental health, nearly twenty five percent of Americans struggle with depression and also anxiety. However, less than fifty percent of all the people in this count actually receive mental health services.

People who self diagnose and oversimplify the disease are not helping, either. It could be that they refer to themselves as depressed when in fact theyre just normally sad. Its not worth mentioning that depression is serious condition contrived by various aspects ranging from mental, physical, psychosocial, neurochemical, and many others. Sadness and grief are normal feelings and patterns and are in no way tantamount to this condition.

Depression imposing on ones physical health to boot. Some of its symptoms include frequent bouts of sadness, devitalizing feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness, loss of enthusiasm in erstwhile favorites and hobbies, and anger and anxiety, which can be a different ailment all on its own. Anyway, these symptoms may translate to ones physicality, as in getting too little or too much sleep, changes in eating habits, getting headaches, muscle pains, and some such.

If the depressive episodes are identified to be triggered by psychosocial factors and faulty personal relationships, interpersonal therapy may be the go to. Or if negative thinking and behaviors are the triggers, patients might be trained to reinforce their thought patterns and behavior through cognitive and behavioral training. Cognition can also translate to mindfulness therapy, that which is particularly useful to persons who report chronic unhappiness.

There are many different specialists up for ones choosing, having perhaps similar or synonymous titles. However, each of them brings different education, training, insights, character, and experience to the table. Therefore, looking for and choosing your specialist can be quite an enterprise in itself.

First things first, however, important distinctions should be made. Before choosing a therapist, the patient should have a clear idea on what he or she is suffering. Diagnosis is of course the specialists job, but it wouldnt do to fetter yourself to the wrong kind of professional, as that would be some form of misdiagnosis in itself. For example, its worth noting that the top two personages in this field are the psychiatrists and the psychologists. The two are similar but not synonymous. Psychiatrists specialize in diagnosing and treating mental or psychiatric illnesses. They have medical training and are therefore licensed to prescribe drugs. On the other hand, psychologists do better in therapy, counseling, and mere testing. If you think your problem is more neurological than cognitive, it would do to approach the former instead of the latter.

Its important to have a positive view and relationship with your therapist of choice. It should be a given that you feel comfortable with him or her. There are many treatment approaches, so you should settle for one in which you agree with or subscribe to. Also factor in how long the treatment will take, and the therapists contingency plans in case it unfortunately wont work.

The most important thing is that you feel open and comfortable with your therapist, because only then can therapy commence and be potentially successful. After all, its you that will evince whatever results youve gleaned from sessions and treatments. A specialist is just there to up your chances of improvement and full healing, but the onus is on you, so to speak.
