The Seventh Day Adventist church is the largest Adventist Christian group in the world. Numerous Adventist churches started in New York, United States, from Millerite movement that was in existence in the 1840s. The movement was started by William Miller after prophesying that in 1844 Jesus was to return.
Miller based the prediction on biblical verses and was able to convince very many people to become members of the church. When Jesus did not return in 1844, many of the newly-joined members were disappointed and returned to their original churches. It would later be believed that Miller had made correct calculations, but had misinterpreted the bible. In the month of October, 1844, Jesus was to enter the most holy part of heaven as opposed to his return to earth.
For over two decades, the SDA group comprised of small groups of people bound loosely. These people came from various churches but had their faith in the Sabbath doctrine.
