Religious schools are as old as mankind itself. From the beginning of time the church has realized just how important it is for young people to learn and churches of all faiths ran educational programs. Religious schools have their critics, of course. Most of the criticism is aimed at the fact that students are not exposed to a wide variety of philosophies and religions and that they have very little choice in the matter. They say that kids should choose a set of morals and beliefs for themselves when they are ready to do so. Critics argue that religious instruction should be done by the church, outside of school hours.

When considering a religious school parents cannot simply accept that the school will provide a proper education. The religious principles guiding the management policy of the school should be evaluated and parents must make sure that they agree with them. It is also advisable to choose a school that offers students a wide variety of choices regarding cultural and sport activities in addition to their academic subjects.

Parents must also take great care to make sure that their children do not live completely cut off from the rest of the world. They will have to live and work in the secular world but they will have difficulties if they were overly protected during their school years. They need to learn that not all people subscribe to their faith system.

Parents must be aware of the fact that their children will inevitably be exposed to influences that go against their religious belief. Placing them in a religious school will not prevent such exposure. Kids need to be able to discuss their feelings and emotions with both their parents and their teachers without fear.
